WASHINGTON — In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to allow Texas’ near-total abortion ban (SB 8) to remain in effect while challenges to the law proceed, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
“Today’s decision from the Supreme Court shows an utter disregard for the health care needs and constitutional rights of people seeking abortion care. For more than three months Texans have struggled to access safe, affordable abortion care under SB 8 in a horrifying glimpse of what millions more people will face if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Every day that the Texas law denies people access to abortion takes away the health care and economic security that people need to take care of themselves and their families. No one should be forced to spend hundreds of dollars and travel thousands of miles from their homes to access the health care they need just because of where they live.
“The constitutional right to an abortion has been well-established and upheld for 50 years, but now, anti-abortion judges on our courts are putting their politics and personal beliefs over the the law of the land. No matter who they are or where they live, every person should have the right to make their own decisions about health care and starting a family without interference, punishment or shame. The Supreme Court must uphold the law that guarantees everyone the freedom to make health care decisions and Congress must ensure that everyone has access to the full range of reproductive health options, including abortion services.”
