Trump’s Health Care Record Should Disqualify Him for 2020
WASHINGTON — Ahead of President Trump’s 2020 campaign launch, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
“President Trump’s announcement is more bad news for millions of Americans struggling with the high cost of health care. Even though lowering health care costs is a top issue for most voters, President Trump continues to do everything in his power to take away Americans’ health care by sabotaging the Affordable Care Act (ACA), trying to dismantle Medicaid and cutting Medicare. He has used every avenue to attack health care, calling on the courts to invalidate the ACA, ending protections for pre-existing conditions and effectively rolling back Medicaid expansion. He has intentionally thrown the insurance markets into chaos and gutted the ACA to pay for corporate tax breaks in his 2017 tax law.
“Despite promises of ‘sweeping action’ to lower prescription drug costs, Trump panders to drug manufacturers and their PhRMA lobbyists at every turn. He has done nothing to stop their price-fixing – Some of Trump’s proposals will actually empower big corporations to reap even more profits by gouging patients, earning Trump praise from PhRMA while doing nothing to ensure affordable prescriptions for seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, and children.
“When it comes to health care, actions speak louder than words. President Trump has proven where he stands time and time again as he has relentlessly attacked affordable coverage, protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and programs like Medicaid and Medicare. All the while Trump lets big PhRMA off the hook for putting profits over patients. Voters were not fooled during the midterms by his attempts to cover up his war on health care. They aren’t likely to be fooled in 2020 either.”
