Trump’s ACA Sabotage Executive Order Will Gut Protections, Force Sickest to Pay Skyrocketing Prices

“This is a transparent attempt to destroy the Affordable Care Act.”

Washington, DC — Today, President Trump issued a new executive order that will expand the availability of junk insurance plans in a direct attempt to trigger the collapse of the entire private health insurance market and destroy the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In response, Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge, co-directors of Health Care for America Now, issued the following statement:

“This executive order is a transparent attempt to destroy the Affordable Care Act. It takes the president’s sabotage campaign to a new level by trying to force the collapse of the entire individual health insurance market and leaving our sick and most vulnerable to pay the price. This strips the most important consumer protections from the ACA, allowing insurance companies to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions and sell junk insurance. The president is attempting to do with the stroke of a pen what Americans have rejected overwhelmingly and what he failed to do in Congress five times.

“This partisan, political act is part of Trump’s relentless campaign to sabotage the ACA by forcing premium increases, creating instability in the market, actively interfering with the ability of consumers to sign up for coverage, and rolling back the contraceptive coverage mandate.

“It’s time for Trump and the Republican Party to end their war on health care. Instead of working to take health care away from millions or explode costs, our elected representatives should work to find bipartisan solutions to expand access to affordable health care.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
