Senate Vote is an Unconscionable, Partisan Political Act to Take Health Care Away from Millions

Washington, D.C. – Margarida Jorge and Ethan Rome, co-directors of Health Care for America Now, released the following statement ahead of the Senate vote on the motion to proceed to some version of the GOP repeal bill.

“This vote is an unconscionable partisan political act of the worst kind. It’s a vote to strip health care away from millions of Americans, increase costs for millions more, end Medicaid as we know it and weaken consumer protections – all to give tax breaks to the very wealthy and drug and insurance companies. To characterize the Motion to Proceed vote as anything other than a vote to take away America’s health care would be disingenuous at best.

“Congress should stop trying to claim political ‘wins’ that destroy America’s health care and instead work in a bipartisan way to expand access to affordable care.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
