Kavanaugh and Texas v. Azar Threaten Affordable Health Care For Millions Of Americans
Washington, DC – As the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings continue this week and opening arguments in the Texas v. Azar case begin today, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement regarding these looming threats to the Affordable Care Act (ACA):
“The Texas v. Azar lawsuit and the impending confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh seriously threaten public health and economic security for millions of American families. After repeated, failed attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act in Congress, the Trump administration’s Supreme Court nominee combined with DOJ’s refusal to defend the law against the Texas v. Azar challenge could be the most impactful elements of their sabotage campaign to take coverage away from twenty million Americans. If the law is overturned, it would strip millions of Americans of the coverage they’ve gained, shift huge new burdens to states that would lose Medicaid funding, and put insurance companies back in charge of our health care, allowing them to deny coverage or jack up rates for people with pre-existing conditions.
“We cannot go back to a time when millions of Americans had no health care, when families declared bankruptcy because their policies capped or limited coverage, and loved ones died because their treatment was too expensive. Approving Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, especially as the Texas v. Azar case to overturn the law is making its way to the high court, could enable the Trump Administration to steal health care from millions of Americans. American voters already made their voices heard loud and clear during the repeal efforts last year, and they will be watching this latest effort to take away our healthcare.
