House and Senate Pass Tax Bill Scam that will Gut Health Care, Slash Medicaid and Medicare to Give Massive Tax Breaks to the Rich and Big Corporations
Bill will Raise Taxes on Middle-Class to Pay for Tax Giveaway to GOP Donors
Washington, D.C. – After both the U.S. House and Senate passed the final tax bill that would repeal the individual responsibility provision of the Affordable Care Act, gut Medicaid and Medicare, and raise taxes on the middle-class to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations, Health Care for America Now Co-Directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
“This tax bill is an absolute and total assault on America’s poor, working, and middle-class families. In their singular purpose of reducing taxes for the wealthy and big corporations, the Republicans have passed a bill that raises taxes on nearly everyone while stealing health care from children, seniors and people with disabilities by gutting life-saving programs like Medicaid and Medicare. Republicans ignored the calls, the protests and the letters from millions of Americans begging them not to pass this tax scam. Instead, they listened to their campaign donors, putting self-interest and special interests before doing the right thing again and again.
“This bill is a scam because it won’t reform the tax code, create jobs or help working families. Instead, it raises taxes on 92 million taxpayers, leave 13 million more people uninsured, and raise premiums by 10% to pay for permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest households, Wall Street’s biggest corporations and huge real estate tycoons like President Trump himself.
“People will not forget the legislators who voted to cut our health care to pay for this massive tax giveaway. Every member of Congress who voted for this disaster of a plan and abandoned their constituents will be held accountable and pay for this at the ballot box.”
