Press Release: Grassroots Pressure Saves Health Care for Millions

Washington, DC – Health Care for America Now (HCAN) co-directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced there would be no vote on the latest repeal plan from Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Dean Heller (R-NV) and Ron Johnson (R-WI):

“This is a victory for the millions of Americans who will continue to have affordable health care and basic protections and for the hundreds of thousands of activists from red states and blue states who fought against repeated efforts to destroy America’s health care. While many doubted it was possible to stop this last-chance scramble to repeal the Affordable Care Act, constituents across the country proved them wrong.

“We haven’t seen the last of efforts to repeal this law, and we expect that the Republicans in Congress will want to slash Medicare and Medicaid to pay for huge tax cuts for corporations and the very wealthy. There is a big budget and tax battle ahead and we’ll be there every step of the way to protect health care. 

“Instead of working to take health care away from Americans by any means necessary, Congress needs to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program and build on bipartisan efforts to strengthen the Affordable Care Act by expanding access to affordable health care. With the Trump Administration playing games with Cost Sharing Reduction payments, consumers could face fewer insurance choices with much higher premiums unless Congress acts immediately.”
