GOP Tax Plan is a One-Two Punch to Working Families
Washington, D.C. – After Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate and House came to an agreement on a final tax bill, Health Care for America Now Co-Directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
“There is no fixing the Republicans’ terrible tax plan. It is an assault on children, working families, seniors and people with disabilities, and makes it crystal clear that the GOP will always put their millionaire, billionaire, and big corporate donors ahead of the Americans they purport to represent. To make matters worse, Senate leadership is blatantly disregarding the clear will of Alabama voters by trying to jam this disastrous bill through before Senator-Elect Doug Jones has taken his rightful spot in the Senate.
“If raising taxes on the middle class and taking away deductions that help families pay their bills wasn’t bad enough, this legislation will also rip life-saving health care away from millions of Americans and raise premiums on millions more. It is health care repeal in disguise, and no stabilization bill will undo its devastating impacts. The Republicans also will use the deficits this tax plan creates to justify slashing vital programs like Medicaid and Medicare next year – a one-two punch for America’s families. Everyone gets hurts except the richest 1 percent and big corporations.
“This legislation is historically unpopular and Americans across the country have risen up against it because it’s rotten to the core. The tax bill takes the GOP’s long war on health care one step further by declaring war on all of America’s poor, working, and middle-class families. In 2018, every Republican will pay for this plan at the ballot box.”
