Farm Bill Protects Food Assistance for Working Families, Older Americans, Kids and People with Disabilities
Washington, DC – In response to the House and Senate releasing the text of the bipartisan Farm Bill that protects the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
“The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) continues to be one of the best tools our country has to fight against poverty and prevent another economic downturn like the Great Depression. There should be no compromise when it comes to making sure Americans can afford to put food on their tables and this Farm Bill rightly upholds our country’s long-standing, bipartisan commitment to ensuring no family goes hungry.
“Protecting food assistance for working families, older Americans, children and people with disabilities is not only morally right, it is a basic component of good health care. Far too often, Republicans have given away millions to those who have the most when they should be investing in good jobs, health care, and education for everyday Americans. The GOP spent $1.4 trillion on tax breaks for big corporations and the very wealthy in last year’s tax law, so it’s only fitting that Congress ensure that single moms, seniors and people with disabilities can afford dinner.”
