WASHINGTON — In response to President Joe Biden’s announcement of U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as his Supreme Court nominee, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
Ketanji Brown Jackson’s track record shows that she will be a champion for the right to access affordable health care, regardless of gender, age, race or income. As a former public defender and distinguished appellate court judge, Jackson has not shied away from holding powerful special interests accountable. She will serve as a strong defender of the Constitutional rights of all Americans, not just corporations and the wealthiest one percent.
The current Supreme Court is tilted in favor of conservative extremists who have shown little respect for precedent and the rule of law when it comes to upholding the Affordable Care Act, access to abortion and contraception and COVID-19 protections. As the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, Jackson brings a diverse perspective to the role, increased balance to the bench and another voice to champion individual rights and liberties against reckless, ideologically-motivated decisions that undermine the legitimacy of the Court. The Senate should approve this nomination as soon as possible, so they can move on to addressing the urgent crises currently facing our nation and growing threats abroad.
