WASHINGTON — In response to the confirmation of U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
The confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the highest court in the land is a historic moment for our country. She will bring a new perspective to the Court as the first Black woman and first public defender to serve on the Supreme Court and will serve as a strong defender of the Constitutional rights of all Americans, not just corporations and the wealthiest one percent.
The Supreme Court has enormous influence on who gets to access health care, including abortion care, who gets to participate in our democracy and how working families are treated. At a time when the Supreme Court’s balance is tilted toward conservative extremists who have shown little respect for precedent and the rule of law when it comes to upholding the Affordable Care Act, access to abortion and contraception and COVID-19 protections, Judge Jackson will be another voice to champion individual rights and liberties against reckless, ideologically-motivated decisions that undermine the legitimacy of the Court. With many critically important cases coming before the Supreme Court, Judge Jackson will be a vital presence on the Court now and for many decades to come.
