WASHINGTON — In response to yesterday’s oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which could determine the future of Roe v. Wade, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
“Safe, affordable and accessible abortion care is a critical part of health care. Yesterday’s hearing and the potential danger to Roe v. Wadecould deny millions of people over the coming decades access to abortion care, leading to serious health and economic consequences for them and their families, deepening health disparities and turning back the clock on basic human rights. Everyone should have the right to make their own health care decisions and safely access the care they need, whether to start a family or end a pregnancy. The Supreme Court should be working to protect rights and expand equal access to critical health services, including reproductive health services and maternal health care, rather than taking away health care to appease anti-abortion extremists that want to play politics with health care.
“For nearly 50 years, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed our Constitutional right for each person to make personal healthcare decisions like abortion without interference or undue barriers. The Supreme Court must continue to protect our Constitutional rights by striking down Mississippi’s ban.”
