Senate Republicans Plan to Strip Millions of Health Care, Increase Premiums While Giving Tax Breaks to Corporations and Very Wealthy
Washington, D.C. – Today, Senate Republicans announced they want to pay for more than $300 million in tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations by taking away health care from millions and increasing premiums for working families. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), repealing the individual responsibility provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will take coverage away from 13 million and raise rates by 10%.
In response, Margarida Jorge and Ethan Rome, co-directors of Health Care for America Now, issued the following statement:
“Repealing the individual mandate is such an extreme proposal it begs the question, ‘Is there anything the Republicans won’t do to America’s working families to shower millionaires and billionaires with tax breaks they don’t need?’ Repealing the individual mandate will take health care away from millions and increase premiums for millions more to pay for just part of the Republicans’ tax giveaways to the very wealthy and big corporations. The tax plan will also force massive cuts to Medicare and Medicaid while increasing taxes on 47 million middle-class Americans. It’s unconscionable.
“This is no way to govern. It’s no way to reform taxes. And it’s no way to improve access to health care. America deserves better.”

HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
