Amy

Lawrence, KS

I am a graduate student in Canada and I was diagnosed with cancer three months ago. I am unusually young for the form of cancer I have. The minute I was diagnosed, I was grateful that I was not in America. In Canada, I have guaranteed health care, and the doctors are free to make the best decisions for my care. I have nothing but the best hopes for my recovery, and I do not think I would feel this way in my own country.

I cannot stress enough: Health insurance does NOT equal health care. It is NEVER in an insurance company's interest to save lives. Paying for care ALWAYS cuts into profits, and profit is the only aim of a corporation, period. We, as Americans, deserve the same access to health care that other humans on this planet have. We deserve to not worry about money when the worst diagnoses are given to us. We deserve access to surgeons, oncologists, pediatric surgeons, and other specialists regardless of where or how we live. We deserve not to be overcharged for health services. We deserve not to live in fear of accidental injury.

We, all Americans, are the only ones who can demand this. I deserve to return to a country that cares more about its citizens than the bottom line. Everyone deserves the chance for life. Life should not be available only to the wealthy.
