Health care is expensive, but I'm lucky as I'm a California State employee; my coverage is good and relatively affordable.
However, my friends and family suffer. My beloved friend Debbie has such a high deductible and also a high co-pay that she frequently cannot go in to address health problems before they become emergency problems. While it would be less expensive, not to mention better for her health, to address needs before they become life threatening, she cannot afford it.
Health care should not make you choose.
Another friend with diabetes is using pain medication because she has no health care and cannot go in and seek the cause of the kidney pain. She covers it up with pain medication, treating the symptom and not the problem.
I worry that she may suffer irreparable damage to her kidneys. I worry for her children, who, though they have health care through the State, may lose a parent.
We need better alternatives. Other nations are doing it; Americans deserve it.
