Ellen

South Bend, IN

A couple of years ago I developed a breast abscess while traveling in England. I went to the emergency room at the West Dorset hospital, where antibiotic treatment was started immediately and I was admitted. Specialists were holding a regular breast clinic that afternoon and I was squeezed into their schedule, where I had an ultrasound and a consultation with a surgeon. They were unable to get me into surgery that evening (even though they tried until 11 pm), but I had surgery to drain the abscess the next afternoon. I was in hospital almost four days. The physical environment was way below US standards, but the care was excellent. My caregivers back in the States were entirely satisfied with the care I was given in the UK. I paid nothing. There are tradeoffs, certainly, but on balance, I believe the National Health is a fine program. For the US, I think the best option is a single-payer solution, a la Medicare (which has served me very well).
