The current system is backwards. When my partner and I were both earning generous incomes, we also had a sweet benefits package through her employer. We paid nothing for any medical costs, including prescription medications, and we had incomes that would have supported all the medical expenses we incurred.

When she was unemployed, in grad school, and undergoing breast cancer treatment -- and I, self-employed, had cut back my client projects by half to care for her -- we were on our own. No sweet benefits package for us. We were able to find some decent insurance, but we pay the premiums each month plus the deductible plus the copays plus the medication costs. And with our income cut to a fourth of its previous level, we found it much more difficult to do so.

It's backwards, and it's wrong. Health care should be available to everyone, no matter their income, no matter their situation.
