Our 16-year-old daughter is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few weeks before her 8th birthday. The tumor ruptured a blood vessel in her brain and required emergency surgery. The neurosurgeon that performed her life-saving surgery was not a member of our network of doctors. Neither were several other of the doctors (anesthesiologist, radiologists, pathologists, etc.) involved in her care that night. Our insurance company would only pay 50% of these charges. We appealed the decision and the company paid an additional 10%. The remaining 40% plus our regular co-pays for all of the office visits and treatments left us with tens of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills. Paying these bills took several years, depleted our savings, and left us living paycheck to paycheck. Needless to say, these were very lean years. No family should have to worry about medical bills when the life of a loved one is in the balance. Congress should not have better health care coverage than the rest of us. We need universal health care and we need it now.
