My husband and I are freelance artists. We couldn't afford private health care insurance but luckily (or unluckily, it depends on how you view it) our income was low enough to qualify us for Kids' Care partially subsidized insurance. We had that for a few years and it was great. I got breast cancer in 2006 and thankfully was covered for my treatment, but my youngest child turned 18 not long after and we were dropped from the plan. I've tried getting private insurance but it's either unbelievably expensive or they won't cover us. I'm terrified to get a mammogram in case they find something that we can't pay to treat, and I'm terrified if I don't go for the test. And nobody ever mentions dental care. Aren't your teeth part of your overall well-being? None of us have been able to afford a dentist for years!
