My family has had to go without health insurance because it is not affordable for us. Even though we would be considered "middle class" health insurance has been out of our reach. My son had a skateboarding accident and had a concussion. We took him to the emergency room. Thankfully it was a mild concussion and no need for hospitalization or further treatment. However, we did not have the money to pay for the emergency room visit. The financial representative helped me with all the forms I had to fill out for Medi-Cal. I have worked in the medical field and am familiar with insurance and Medi-cal programs. I have seen people obtain Medi-cal within days for an emergency. I did not think this would be a problem. At the tgime, my husband was not working and I was not making enough to support our family. We have wonderful families who have helped us out through the tough times. We were on the verge of being evicted when I applied for Medi-cal. After many weeks, I received my packet in the mail. Medi-cal would cover any expenses after we paid our share of cost. However, our share of cost was $3,000.00/month. I called to verify this as I could not believe it. If I had an extra $3,000.00/month I wouldn't need Medi-cal. We now are both working--we are independent contractors and still are without health insurance because of affordability.Where is the help for us?
