I am a Dutch citizen, living in California, and I am appalled at the cost of health care in the USA. A lot of the money we pay has to do with greed, insurance companies and health care providers wanting to make a profit. Government has to play a role to protect its citizens from having to pay excessively for health care, or even worse, from not getting the care they need at all. Another part is the extreme bureaucracy and administrative overkill, costing a lot of money. I do not care to receive a letter every month about what I should or should not pay to my dentist, if that drives up the cost. Once a year would be good enough. Government can also help making these insurance companies more efficient.
I have plenty of examples where in the Netherlands the health care system works a lot better. I found out for example that if I would buy birth control pills for half a year, full price, in the Netherlands, I would pay less than my copay for those pills for three months in the USA. That is simply not right!
