I have found that having PPO insurance, where you have your choice of doctors, etc., is fast becoming a luxury. I have multiple sclerosis, and as a result, my medical costs were exhorbitant until I went into a HMO situation. I was on a Cobra plan through Blue Cross, which cost me over $800/month. My MS medication is a daily injection. Blue Cross has a clause that for all injectables except for insulin, the co-payment was 30 or 40% of the negotiated cost (I don't remember which). My co-payment for my shots was about $500/month. So that's a total of $1300/month for just those 2 items! With the HMO, I am now paying $479/month, and my shots are $30/month - quite a difference. My medical expenses last year topped $12,000, which has a definite impact on my life! During the 12 years since I was diagnosed, I have seen an incredible increase in my medical expenses. It's really getting out of hand.
