I work as physician assistant in a college health facility. One of my patients, whom I will call "N," is a 21-year-old male with type 1 diabetes. He works full-time to put himself through college. He is also paying for his housing, food, medications, and medical visits. He has no health insurance. At one of his recent visits, it became clear that his diabetes was not well controlled and that he had hypertension. I set up an appointment at a local diabetes care clinic, which he later said he could not afford. I looked into sending him to a local clinic for the uninsured, but unfortunately, he "made too much money" at his job to qualify for care.
That he he cannot get the medicine (insulin) and care he needs (speicalized diabetes care) to prevent the renal, cardiac, and eye complications of uncontrolled diabetes is nothing less than criminal.
