Hi,
I worked for a company for almost 20 years. I was terminated at age 51 due to the inability to do my job due to the Doctor's errors during my hand surgeries. I never thought that I would not be working until my so called "retirement" date, but that is not what happened. I am now 61 years old and receive Medicare/Disability and cannot afford a supplemental. During my employment I had great health insurance, dental, vision and life insurance until I lost it all after being terminated.
I was looking for a local doctor for my yearly check-ups and for other minor issues. One medical group that I called told me that I can only call on the first of the month, as that is the only time a Medicare recipient can make an appointment. I was also told that I would have to be one of the first of ten callers, if not I would have to wait until the following month. Another place I called told me that Medicare is not accepted, because the doctor loses money with Medicare patients. I went to an orthopaedic doctor who in turn sent me to a physical therapist. During my first visit with the therapist I was told that I would have to wait at least 2 weeks for any additional appointments even though the doctor said I was to go 3 times a week. I was offered a waitlist during those 2 weeks in case of a cancellation. This "waitlist" is for Medicare patients only.
I have worked hard all of my life. I am very grateful for Medicare, but that being said, it is very difficult to find the medical care that I need. I don't feel that I am "entitled", but I do wish there was a greater advantage to better health care.
As is stated, I am not getting any younger and do not look forward to a positive future of health care that as of right now, is being slowly taken away.
Thank you,
Carole Dosch
