As a freelance writer/editor, I have struggled to keep private healthcare coverage for eight years. Earlier this year, due to the economic downturn, which has affected me as much as everyone else, I had to make some hard choices. I am no longer covered for medical or dental, and at age 54, this concerns me. Recently I hurt my lower back and am unable to pay for treatment. I've worked all my life, since age 19, paid my taxes, and I firmly believe that Americans are being held hostage by the insurance and drug companies from obtaining the universal coverage other countries have had for many years. This needs to be a top priority in the presidential campaign.
