I developed type 1 diabetes at 21. My entire professional life as a landscape architect has been shaped by my chasing after the security of group health insurance... without which I may not be able to afford the astronomical costs of insulin, syringes and testing supplies. No health insurance company will provide me with an individual policy for less than $1,600/month - far more than I cost any insurance company.

I have never had any particular complications from my diabetes, but without proper testing and regular doctors visits I could easily spiral out of control.

The insurance system as it exists now puts me in a position of reliance on employment at a company of a minimum size to qualify for insurance. Or, I have to marry a man who works for a large company to get coverage...
It feels a lot like servitude and I'm not happy about it.
