Our family has insurance. We've been with the same company for nearly 20 years and pay over $800 a month for it. I don't think we ever met our deductable till this year; I had surgery. The hospital billed me 36,000 for the surgery. The insurance company has a deal with the hospital--they're only allowed to charge $4,000 for that surgery. That surgery had to have cost the hospital more thatn $4,000. Since my medical expenses this year were over my deductable, they paid most of that $4K, so I'm doing fine, but when my brother goes to the emergency room to get stitches, just a simple cut needing simple stitches, they charge him $5000! He doesn't have insurance. There's something wrong with this picture.
