My husband left the corporate world and opened his own business in 9/07. I was laid off after 13 years with the same company in 3/08. Our family of 4 has been on Cobra and we are paying over $1000/month. Since this is so expensive, I have been shopping around for a private policy and it has been a night mare. The bottom line is even though we are completely blessed with overall good health, we have 5 monthly medications that we take and if we switch over to a less expensive private policy, none of our medications would be covered. We would have to pay out of pocket for these and even with a discount at the local pharmacy, the cost of our medicines plus a private policy would be more than our cobra. We are stuck and feel completely overwhelmed without a solution.
