I am a geriatrics physician and private insurance and even the current medicare and medicaid systems are, in my opinion, one of the biggest tragedies of modern times. We have some of the best health care in the world here, but we also have some of the most pompous and greedy insurers. I, myself, was once denied an individual policy by Humana. I was 29, non-smoker, ran 3 miles a day, and had/have NO medical problems. As a physician who has the power to dissuade all his patients and friends away from using Humana, their rejection just left me breathless. Disgusting. I can also tell you that practicing medicine itself is a bloody nightmare because of insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Every day I have literally mountains of paperwork. One-quarter of this is sometimes documents telling me that one drug or another was rejected by 'the insurance company.' Now i'm forced to find another medicine to help my patient. What are they 'insuring?' Themselves and themselves only. I'll be as active as I can possible be to eliminate these sorts of problems from our healthcare system--forever...
