I'd been struggling with bipolar illness for 25 years -- living in abject poverty, losing one job after another, holding on for dear life in the throes of suicidal despair.
Then I applied for Social Security Disability. They turned me down. Twice. Like they do almost everyone -- our own government.
Years later, I finally did get help and now I run three businesses.
Today, I see the legions living on our streets -- veterans, the mentally ill, entire families -- and wonder, "When did this become OK in the land of the brave and the home of the free?"
