I have supposedly "good" employer-backed health care coverage from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee. We recently took our 1-year old son to the emergency room on a Saturday for stomach pains and diarrhea that wouldn't stop. The pediatrician did nothing but prescribe rest and juice. I expected a "reasonable" emergency copay of $50 to $100. The cost to me for this visit? $500 dollars for emergency services; $80 for emergency specialist services. The reason? "Deductible" of $1,000 (!!) per family member had not been met. We will have to study our health insurance policy the next time one of our children has a health emergency.

This insurance plan also would not cover the standard pediatric immunizations for the baby's first two years. The "Well Baby Coverage" (?!) has a limit of $200 per year.
