I know what it's like to have several thousands of dollars in outstanding medical bills. Thousands of dollars because the treatment was in the ER instead of the office of a physician as a part of regular care.
Currently, due to being totally disabled (SSI), all my care and treatment is funded at NO COST to me. I cannot overstate the overwhelming relief that comes from not having medical debt or worrying about future medical debt.
I find the market-based method currently used in health care to be against the best interests of patients and doctors. Without firm government regulation private industry really has no business or place in such an important part of people's lives.
In addition, our current model of employer's being the gate-keepers of health care seems outdated and elitist. Using jobs or the tax code to administer health care leaves many Americans vulnerable to continued harm.
