Silver Spring, MD

At the age of 28, I was planning on a perfectly healthy pregnancy and delivery -- I had exercised all my life and was in great shape. Unfortunately, not only was I diagnosed with gestational diabetes, but I had a complicated delivery and my son had to spend his first day and a half in the NICU. The hospital bill and related charges came to $22,000. Thank goodness my husband and I had good health insurance and we only had to pay a fraction of that cost. But if we had been uninsured, we would have been unable to afford the cost of our own child's birth.
