I'm one of the healthiest people I know and I do not get insurance from work (I work part-time). So I have had various and sundry private individual insurance policies over the years.

I once was turned down for an insurance policy because I had ONE TIME in the 3 years prior to applying for such policy gone to a sports medicine doctor for advice/treatment for tennis elbow. I never went back and never sought follow-up therapy. But because the state of Colorado where I live forbid them to issue a "rider" for my "elbow problem," they just turned me down altogether. I went without insurance for several months after that (disgusted with insurance companies altogether) until finding another policy (and having to swear that my elbow problem was ALL BETTER NOW).

This was so beyond ridiculous that most people I tell don't really seem to believe it. Sadly, though, it's all too true, and just one small story regarding what happens when a country turns health care coverage over to for-profit companies.
