A tooth of a good friend of mine started to hurt because she had a cavity. She told her mother about it (she was only 16 at the time) and her mom said that her dad (divorced) should pay for the visit and the filling because she didn't have health insurance or enough money to pay for the visit. Her dad said that her mom should pay for it because he didn't have health insurance or enough money to pay for it. This went on and on for well over a month as the tooth became increasingly painful. Finally her mother gave in and got her an appointment but it was too late by then for a filling, the tooth would now require a root canal that would cost her family 1,600$. This story reveals two reasons out of many every minor should have health insurance...no matter what. 1: minors can't be expected to pay for their own health care...that's ridiculous. 2: It's completely ineffective any other way...she never would have needed a costly root canal if she had health insurance so she could get the appointment and simple fill in the first place.
