I am a 71 year old physician who retired 13 years ago after having a stroke. I am fortunate now to have medicare and an excellent supplemental health plan with USAA and because of my previous service in the USAF, can get excellent care and prescription medications at the San Francisco VA Medical Center as well as visits with private physicians if I wish. I took care of many patients who did not have as good options and it makes me angry for the injustice of that. When I was ill I was unfortunate enough to be covered by a "mangled care" sort of HMO in which I feel the care was less than ideal. I have been working with a group, Health Care for All which is striving to obtain universal "single payer" health care available for all residents of California. As I have watched the progress of current political campaigns, I see some encouraging signs and developments, but fear that "gradualism" may prevent implementation of a necessary and overdue universal single payer health care for all system.
