Washington, DC – As Congress is introducing and debating health care legislation, Health Care for America Now (HCAN) – the nation’s largest health care campaign – launched a new $1.1 million television advertising campaign today aimed at key Senators in 10 states, saying the goal of reform is lowering costs, expanding coverage, and keeping the insurance companies honest and the choice of a public health insurance option is essential to achieving those goals.
The ad titled “What If” is running for 10 days starting today in Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington. The ad shows that President Obama’s health care plan will get rid of exorbitant corporate profits, bloated CEO bonuses, endless denials, and skyrocketing costs while giving voters more choice and making private insurance companies behave better.
Two just-released polls – one by the independent, nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute and one by NBC News/Wall Street Journal - show that more than three-quarters of the American public (83 percent and 76 percent respectively) support a public health insurance plan option. President Obama’s health care plan says you can keep your current health insurance, pick a new plan, or join a new public health insurance option – one that would serve to control costs and keep the insurance companies honest.
“We’re asking Senators to support the President’s plan to cover everyone, lower costs, and provide the choice of health care plans, including a public health insurance option,” said Richard Kirsch, National Campaign Manager, Health Care for America Now. “Unfortunately, big money talks, and the health care industry is lobbying hard right now. But the American public still has a voice – and the votes – which is why we’re bringing thousands to DC on June 25th to rally and lobby in support of the kind of health care reform that puts people’s health before corporate profits.”
Yesterday, Health Care for America Now also provided the Senate HELP committee – and released to the press - a 40-plus page compilation of insurance industry abuses (pdf) – indexed by bad practice and by state.
