HCAN Response to Industry: Real Test Will Be In Reform Legislation

Washington, DC – Health Care for America Now – the nation’s largest health care campaign – released the following statement today in response to the White House’s announcement that health care industry stakeholders are volunteering cost controls:

“We welcome the pledge made by the health care industry to bring costs under control. The test of the good intentions expressed today will be whether these same groups agree to real cost control measures in health care reform such as those emphasized today by the White House. For example, will the insurance industry reverse its opposition to reducing overpayments to private insurers in Medicare? Will the drug industry support reduced drug prices, and will hospitals and doctors go along with new payment systems tied to their performance? Only if these groups agree to these and other reforms in health care legislation will today’s good will translate into real good for the American people.

The President also reiterated today that a key principle of reform is making sure everyone has a choice of health insurance plans, and the choice of a public health insurance plan, which has the President’s support, is one of the best ways to drive cost control measures that will enhance quality and guarantee peace of mind to both American families and business owners.”
