Washington, DC – With Senate debate over health care reform possibly moving towards a close this week, Health Care for America Now (HCAN) – the nation’s largest health care campaign – released a new TV ad in Nebraska today urging Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) to vote for cloture.

The ad called “We Agree” explains that Nebraskans have always been able to count on Senator Nelson to do the right thing - first as State Insurance Commissioner, then as Governor, and now as Senator. The spot emphasizes that in this case, letting health care legislation move to an up or down vote would be the right thing to do for Nebraskans and for the country.

In June 2008, Senator Nelson voted for cloture on the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act even though he did not support the legislation himself. In a statement on his website, Senator Nelson explained, "I voted for cloture on the bill to allow it to move forward because I do not support procedural gimmicks that prevent a bill from getting an up or down vote.”

“We know Senator Nelson understands the importance of letting significant legislation move to a vote,” said Richard Kirsch, National Campaign Manager, Health Care for America Now.

“Whether or not he supports the bill, Nebraskans are counting on Senator Nelson to keep the process moving forward. Of course, we also hope he will support health care reform legislation that gives us good health care we can afford and holds insurance companies accountable with a public option and consumer protections.”
“We Agree” will air on both broadcast and cable stations in Omaha and Lincoln.

Nebraska’s Ben Nelson.

As State Insurance Commissioner, Governor and U.S. Senator we’ve come to respect him for doing the right thing.

Now Ben Nelson will help decide whether the health care debate in Washington will receive a final up or down vote.

Last year Senator Nelson said, “I do not support procedural gimmicks that prevent a bill from getting an up or down vote.”
