Trump’s State of the Union Sweeps His Record on Health Care, Tax Giveaway Under the Rug

President Presents Dark Vision for Our Health Care Future

Washington, DC – In response to Trump’s first State of the Union, Health Care for America Now Co-Directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“Rather than take this opportunity to lay out a positive vision for the future of our country, President Trump used the State of the Union to tell the wealthy and well connected he’s on their side. But as is often case, he didn’t tell the truth about his record on the issues Americans care most about.

“Trump’s remarks about his tax plan included one lie after another. The Republican tax giveaway isn’t about raising workers’ pay or growing the economy – it’s about giving a massive tax break to rich people and big corporations, paid for by tax hikes on the middle class and cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and other benefits working families depend on.

“Trump also didn’t tell the truth about health care, an issue where Trump and the Republicans don’t have a positive agenda – just a wrecking ball.  Trump has waged war on America’s health care from the day he took office, beginning with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). He actively sabotaged the ACA, forcing consumers to pay more, weakening protections, and decreasing insurance options, and then he had the audacity to blame the ACA for the wreckage left in his wake. Trump and the Republicans in Congress also tried to slash Medicare and end Medicaid as we know it. As a result of their tax giveaway, 13 million people will lose their health care.

Tonight, Trump talked about a government that treats its people with love and loyalty. Is taking away people’s health care a way of showing love and loyalty? Americans know better than to believe Trump’s bold-faced lies or trust his false promises. Voters will remember everything he and Republicans did to destroy our country’s health care when they go to the polls in 2018 and 2020.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
