#TaxScam Sequel Gives More to the Rich and Cuts Health Care, Important Programs for Working Families

Washington, DC – In response to House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) releasing new tax legislation today that makes permanent the tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent and takes away important deductions for working families, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“Working families will see no relief from the Republicans’ sequel to their tax scam, which once again benefits millionaires and billionaires while forcing cuts to life-saving programs like Medicaid and Medicare. Like the original tax plan that gave trillions in permanent tax breaks to the nation’s largest corporations last year, Brady’s latest version will do nothing to create jobs, put more money in workers’ paychecks or stimulate the economy.

“This last-ditch effort to score political points won’t fool average Americans, who will bear the brunt of paying for the $2.8 trillion in new giveaways to the wealthy in the bill through cuts in essential programs that help working families afford health care and put food on the table.  Veterans, working families and people with disabilities will make their voices heard at the ballot box and make it clear that any member of Congress who puts access to affordable health care on the chopping block to further rig the economy in favor of the 1 percent will not be tolerated.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
