House Votes to Strip Millions of Health Care to Give Huge Tax Cuts to Millionaires, Corporations

Budget Makes Savage Cuts to Medicaid, Radically Restructures Program

Washington, D.C. – After the House passed its budget resolution, Health Care for America Now Co-Directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“The House Republican budget resolution is a shameful document powered by the Republicans’ guiding principle that it’s okay take health care away from poor and middle-class families to give tax breaks to big corporations, millionaires and billionaires.

“The House budget resolution calls for savage cuts to Medicaid and radically restructures and starves the program. It slashes and privatizes Medicare. It tears health care away from the most vulnerable for wasteful tax giveaways to people and companies that don’t need them. It strips health care from millions by repealing the Affordable Care Act. All told, this budget resolution cuts $2.9 trillion from services working families depend on. These cuts are draconian, and this vote was reprehensible.

“House Republicans have shown they are willing to do whatever it takes, including destroying America’s health care, to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. It’s time for Republicans to end their war against health care.

“Instead of working to take health care away from millions to foot the bill for tax cuts for the 1 percent, our elected representatives should work to find bipartisan solutions to expand access to affordable health care.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
