House Tax Bill Cuts Health Care for Working Families to Give Tax Breaks to the Very Wealthy and Big Corporations

Washington, D.C. – After the House Ways and Means Committee released its tax bill that will cut Medicaid and Medicare to pay for massive tax cuts for the very wealthy and big corporations, Health Care for America Now Co-Directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“The Republican tax plan is just the latest scam to give big breaks to the rich and corporations at the expense of working families. For most of this year, Republicans have tried to repeal the ACA and dismantle Medicaid in order to then give big tax breaks to the rich, insurers and the prescription drug companies. This time around, they are working in reverse order with a proposal that first gives big tax cuts for the rich and corporations and then cuts health care to pay for it.

“Transferring more wealth to the richest people and corporations already making record profits won’t create jobs, reform the tax code or help America’s families in any way. All it will do is slash health care for people who need it to pay for tax breaks for people and corporations who should be paying more, not less.

“Once again, the GOP is demonstrating their blatant disregard for the health of working families, seniors and people with disabilities by slashing Medicaid, Medicare, and other critical programs to make way for a tax giveaway to those who need it the least. Their plan will make life-saving resources and medications unaffordable and unattainable for millions while their rich donors get richer.

“It’s far past time for Republicans to listen to their constituents and reject this plan, end their war on health care, and work towards bipartisan solutions to expand access to affordable health care.”
