House GOP Votes to Take Food Away from Working Families, Children

Washington, DC – In response to the Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives passing their version of the Farm Bill that includes new restrictions and cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Health Care for America Now Co-Directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“The GOP’s moral compass is broken. Their vote to steal food out of the hands of working families, children, people with disabilities, veterans, and older Americans works is wrong and abandons America’s longstanding bipartisan commitment to feed the hungry. This week marks the six-month anniversary of the Republicans’ new tax law that gave $1.4 trillion in tax breaks to millionaires, billionaires and big corporations, including some that pay wages so low that employees rely on SNAP to make ends meet. Now the same Republicans are stealing $19 billion in cuts from a program that keeps food on the table for single moms, low-wage workers, kids and working families.

“Children and families with access to SNAP have better long-term health outcomes than those who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. The Senate should continue to push forward its own bipartisan bill that recognizes the importance of ensuring people have enough food to eat and reject this attack on working families.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
