Grace Evans, Policy Associate
Grace promotes HCAN’s public policy efforts and legislative agenda. Before joining HCAN, Grace worked for Representative Frank M. Kratovil, Jr., both on his first campaign for Congress and in his Capitol Hill office. Grace also has experience with several D.C. nonprofits, including the National Audubon Society and Oceana, and was a legal fellow in Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s office.
Shadia Garrison, Director of Development and Administration
Shadia has more than 17 years of experience in project management and development for nonprofits, associations and foundations. Previous employers include the American Medical Student Association Foundation, the American Red Cross, and the National Physicians Alliance. In her work she has focused on diversity in health professions, cultural competency, behavior change theory and practice, interdisciplinary teams, health policy, and health care reform.
Avram Goldstein, Communications and Research Director
Av directs HCAN communications and media relations efforts. He also oversees researchers and writers who have produced reports on insurance industry profits, insurance market consolidation, health care affordability, racial and ethnic disparities, the impact of the new law, and other topics. Av was a reporter and editor for more than 30 years at the Washington Post, Bloomberg News, the Detroit News, the Miami Herald, a South Florida newspaper for doctors and a San Francisco daily newspaper for lawyers. He has written about health insurance companies, health policy, physicians, hospitals, government health programs, and the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.
Margarida Jorge, National Field Director
Margarida leads organizing efforts nationally and works with community, labor and faith partners in more than 30 states. She has nearly two decades of field experience in more than 20 states organizing union elections, candidate campaigns, statewide and local ballot initiatives and state legislative campaigns. Prior to joining HCAN, Margarida served as national director of Americans for Health Care, organizing voters in battleground states to promote national health care reform.
Will O’Neill, Online Manager
Will leads HCAN’s web and social media efforts. He has nearly a decade of electoral campaign and union organizing experience and has worked on races at all levels of government. Before joining HCAN, Will worked as a new media specialist at the United Food and Commercial Workers campaign to organize Walmart and led an online effort to promote a workers’ organization for Walmart employees.
Ethan Rome, Executive Director
Ethan leads Health Care for America Now and its c3 partner, the Health Care for America Education Fund. He has been a grassroots and labor activist and organizer of progressive issue and electoral campaigns for more than 25 years. Before joining HCAN, Ethan directed public affairs for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and served as chief policy and political adviser to the Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives. Ethan started out as a community organizer at the Connecticut Citizen Action Group before serving as its legislative and political director. Ethan is a frequent contributor to The Huffington Post.
Katie Wagenblass, Administrative Coordinator
Katie has eight years of non-profit work experience, including her work as HCAN’s Development Coordinator from 2008 to 2010. She previously held the position of Program Officer at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), where she developed and administered health journalism and information access programs in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the United States. Katie has also worked as a sponsorship assistant at Women for Women International.
